Angel Wagenstein: Art Is a Weapon

2017, 84 min, color/b&w

This documentary weaves together intimate conversations with partisan hero, screenwriter and novelist Angel Wagenstein, along with interviews with artistic collaborators and rare archival footage of Wagenstein’s seven decades in politics and culture, including his crucial role in Bulgaria's democratic reforms of 1989.

A Bulgarian-Jewish communist, Wagenstein met the German-Jewish Konrad Wolf at the Moscow film school VGIK. The two later worked together on the DEFA co-productions Stars and Goya, and Wagenstein also wrote the script for the less well-known DEFA film Story of a Murder.
