The poor charcoal burner Peter Monk summons the good spirit of the forest to help him overcome his outsider stigma, which above all, prevents him from marrying his beloved Lisbeth. Despite the good spirit’s help, Peter squanders his wealth and loses everything. Turning to the dark spirit of the forest to gain it all back, Peter agrees to exchange his heart for a cold stone. The cost is high, however, because as he grows wealthier, he turns brutal. Peter regains his senses, but in order to win the help of the good spirit once again, Peter must go on a quest against the dark spirit and win back his own heart.
