Synopsis

This film documents five months in the life of nineteen-year-old high school student Alexander, a pastor's son and dedicated citizen. With clear-sightedness, Alexander points out the restrictions at school which are inherent in the system. At the same time, he sees socialism as the only way to true humanity.

In Fall '89, the young man takes an active and hopeful role in discussions about the future of his country. But by Spring '90, after the March elections, his hopes have turned into resignation.

The documentary was followed by a sequel, In Transition: A Record of Hope, showing the next year of Alexander's life up to German reunification.
