On March 4, 1973, right wing groups tried to gain a two-thirds majority in the Chilean national congress in order to depose President Allende and his Unidad Popular government. Although this CIA-backed "white coup" was unsuccessful, an armed coup later in the year brought a fascist military goverment to power.
