John, Gottfried

Biography:

Gottfried John was born in 1942 in Berlin. There he had his debut at the Schiller Theater, while still studying acting.

Films by Rainer Werner Fassbinder, such as Die Ehe der Maria Braun, Lili Marleen, and Berlin Alexanderplatz, helped make John a star. In addition to his collaboration with Fassbinder until the director’s death, John worked with other renowned German directors, such as Billy Wilder (Fedora), Heiner Carow (Verfehlung), Volker Schlöndorff (Der Unhold), and Doris Dörrie (Bin ich schön?).

Gottfried John is also internationally known for his appearances in popular movies—for example, as the Soviet General Ourumov in the James Bond film Golden Eye. The media also praised his comedic talent in the French production, Astérix et Obélix contre César.
