Helga Schütz (script) was born in Falkenhain (now: Sokolówka, Poland) on October 2, 1937. In 1944, she moved to Dresden where she attended school and was trained as a gardener. Schütz studied at the ABF (Workers and Farmers Academy) in Potsdam from 1955 until 1958, followed immediately by her studies at the German Film Academy in Potsdam-Babelsberg (now: Konrad Wolf Film University) in 1958. She graduated as a dramaturg and scriptwriter in 1962. After her graduation, she worked as a freelance scriptwriter for documentaries and feature films at the DEFA Studios. Schütz co-wrote scripts and scenarios for major cinema and television feature films by Egon Günther, Lothar Warneke, Roland Gräf and Donat Schober.
Since the 1970s, Schütz has published short stories and novels. Her recent works include the two autobiographical novels, Sepia (2012) and Knietief im Paradies (2005), poetic reflections on her childhood and youth.
Helga Schütz, who has been member of the PEN Center Germany since 1991, lives in Potsdam.
