Rainer Simon was born in 1941 in Hainchen, Germany. He studied at the Academy for Film and Television in Potsdam-Babelsberg from 1961-1965. Simon started his career at the East German DEFA film studios in 1965, working as an assistant director under Ralf Kirsten (Der verlorene Engel, 1970) and Konrad Wolf (Ich war neunzehn, 1967). Simon made his directing debut in 1968 with the children’s film Wie heiratet man einen König. His major films include: Till Eulenspiegel, based on a film script by Christa and Gerhard Wolf; Das Luftschiff; Die Frau und der Fremde, which won the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival; and Jadup und Boel, which was banned by officials and not released until 1988. Since shooting Die Besteigung des Chimborazo in Ecuador, Simon’s work has focused on the life and culture of the indigenous people of Ecuador.
From 1993-1996, Rainer Simon was a guest professor at the Academy for Film and Television in Potsdam-Babelsberg, and he teaches workshops for young filmmakers in Latin America. Simon has presented his Latin American photographs in two touring exhibits: Life with Mother Earth (shown in Quito, Sofia, Potsdam, Berlin, and Dresden) and Fiesta in Sarayacu (shown in Potsdam, Dessau, and Dresden). Rainer Simon lives in Potsdam, Germany.
Rainer Simon was the featured guest of the 2008 Filmmaker’s Tour organized by the DEFA Film Library at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
