Böhme, Marita

Biography:

Marita Böhme was born in Dresden on May 7, 1939. She studied acting at the Ernst Busch Academy for Performing Arts in Berlin from 1958 until 1961. While still a student, she played as a guest at the Volksbühne in Berlin. From 1966 until 1970, Böhme was a member of the Maxim Gorki Theater, where she played the lead in Nora by Henrik Ibsen. She performed at the Staatstheater Dresden from 1970 until 2004.

In 1961 Böhme, still a student, was cast by the DEFA Studio for Feature Films for the female lead in the romantic film musical Auf der Sonnenseite, opposite Manfred Krug. One year later, her performance as Minna in the film adaptation of Lessing's Minna von Barnhelm was described as the film’s most brilliant feature. In Karbid und Sauerampfer, often praised as one of Germany’s best East German film comedies, Böhme won over audiences as the romantic counterpart to Erwin Geschonneck’s character.

The prolific actress was a member of the DEFA ensemble for over 20 years. She was often been cast to play self-confident women opposite strong male leads. In the title role of Egon Günther’s debut film, Lots Weib, she made an important contribution to debates regarding the public and private spheres, and women’s role in East German society. Böhme worked with many well-known East German DEFA directors, including Frank Beyer, Frank Vogel, Egon Günther and Ralf Kirsten.

Böhme also worked extensively in theater and television. Her name was credited in more than 20 episodes of the television crime series Polizeiruf 110, in which she played the girlfriend of Commissioner Schmücke (Jaecki Schwarz) from 1996 until 2004.

In 2004, Marita Böhme retired from stage and film. She lives in Dresden.
