Gerd Kroske: Drawing a Line
On Dec. 13, 2015, director Gerd Kroske presented the US premiere of his film Drawing a Line at Amherst Cinema.
Former East Germany, punk music, the Wall, jail, leaving for the West, betrayal amongst friends and worse – amongst brothers. This documentary film confronts these things on the offensive – seeing them as a balancing act.
In 1986, five former East German citizens with roots in the punk and underground scene planned an art project: they wanted to paint a white line all around the Berlin Wall from the West Berlin side.
The event ended in an arrest by East German border guards, with grave consequences. Only years later did the group discover that one of them was a Stasi collaborator. While the motive for the betrayal remains unclear, the perfidious consequences reach into the present.
