Angel Wagenstein Duo

Screenwriter and novelist Angel Wagenstein is the link between two films to be screened by the Massachusetts Multicultural Film Festival, the DEFA Film Library and Amherst Cinema, April 11-12, 2018.

Andrea Simon’s new documentary, Angel Wagenstein: Art Is A Weapon, will screen as part of the MMFF on April 11. Simon's film weaves together intimate conversations with partisan hero, screenwriter and novelist Wagenstein, interviews with artistic collaborators and rare archival footage of Wagenstein’s seven decades in politics and culture, including his crucial role in Bulgaria's democratic reforms of 1989. It will screen on Wednesday, April 11 at UMass Amherst.

Konrad Wolf’s Stars is a gripping drama, based on scriptwriter Wagenstein's personal experiences. It is set during the Holocaust in the Balkans and sheds light on the experience of Sephardic Jews. It was awarded the Special Grand Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 1959. It will screen on Thursday, April 12 at the Amherst Cinema.

These two films were also paired at the New York Jewish Film Festival on January 12 and 22, 2017, where Andrea Simon's documentary premiered.
